We are 2 great friends who share a love of physical challenges! Between us we’ve completed several Half Iron Man competitions, many triathlon, run various marathons and half marathons, swum around the Scilly Isles and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to name but a few. Cycling for us is a staple part of our week and you’ll find us commuting to work by bike, enjoying weekend rides and racking up big miles for the fun of it – or taking part in a local sportive, such as the Exmoor Beauty, Taunton Flyer and Hammer Martello.
The highlight of 2018, from a sport perspective was an event reputed to the hardest sportive in the UK – L’Etape Wales aka the Dragon Ride – famed for it’s alpine climbs! 140 miles, in one day, cycling around the Brecon Beacons. It was epic. We didn’t think we’d find anything that could peak our interest having achieved something so big….that was until we can across the Ride Across Britain Lands End to John O’Groats Challenge. 980 miles in 9 consecutive days – and our perfect next (2019) challenge!
Cycling is hard work and when you’re cycling for hours (the Dragon Ride was just under 11 hours in terms of ride time) it’s important to consume enough ‘fuel’ to be able to keep going – in the form of carbohydrate/sugar. Our ‘stops’ are a highlight of any ride and we take great delight in finding new cafes that are cyclist friendly so it seemed only fitting that our team name should be relevant….which is how we came up with ‘Only here for the cake!’
